Austin Trip
I'm in Austin today--recording with Elana "Snarfie" Fremerman. Unfortunately, I'm missing birthing class and Laura is having a large doghouse built for me. I'll definately be there next week! Due date is 3 weeks from tonight!! -- Joe
Babies-R-Us
We registered at Babiesrus. What a place! A warehouse for parenthood. Somehow it reminded me of Home Depot with all of the sales associates wandering through their respective stations looking for lost shoppers. "Excuse me could you help me with this stroller?" "Actually I am from 'furniture' let me get the stroller specialist." Next stop. Infant care. I felt pretty unsure about what I needed. Joe seemed to have better security with his scanner gun in hand ready to conquer the job. Next thing I knew Debbi or Candi (or someone with a name ending in I) was leading us through bottles and breast pumps with such aplomb, I couldn't help but wonder how a 17 year old had become such an "expert". "Are you I mother," I asked. "No, but I know all about this stuff. I have been babysitting for a long time...since I was TWELVE!!" She smiled with pride.

Crib Quandary
Crib, cradle, bassinet, porta-crib, co-sleeper, pack-n-play... We are trying to figure out which option will work best with our limited space and resources. It is daunting. Everyone has something different to say. "Bassinets only last 3 weeks" , "Cradles were pointless for us", "Cribs are too big for a newborn", "Pack-n-plays are only for temporary situations" and so on. After a mind-numbing experience of checking 300 opinions on the Amazon/Babies-R-Us website, we decided to check with...THE PEDIATRICIAN (how novel!) He said, "A crib is best since it has firm support, but then again, you can always put the baby in a drawer".
Our Old Blog
We had another blog going last spring. Here is the link to it: http://journals.aol.com/joefkerr/JLBaby/ Hopefully, we can keep this new one going.
Joe's Birthday
Today (the 25th of August) is my birthday. We had a wonderful dinner at Therese Rawson's house and Laura made a terrific almond cake. Now Laura is horizontal and the baby's foot is sticking out through one side of her stomach.

Gender Talk
We are going to be surprised - boy or girl. What should we call the baby while still in-belly? One person suggested Edmundo - which is what her parents called her while she was "in potentiality". I have already predicted a boy, though I really want a girl. My friend Lisa said, "That's because you want to put bows in her hair....you can get a dog for that!"
